powell school

"powell school"
construction started in 1886 with the school opening in 1888.
considered the finest elementary school in the south at that time.
it also the oldest city elementary school, and still in use today!
named after the first president of elyton land co., james p. powell.
the elyton land co. developed birmingham, and later became known as birmingham realty co. which was run by sidney smyer.
